(hitachi-ge). nuclear energy is highly regulated to ensure that the highest levels of safety, security and environmental protection are maintained at all times. for new nuclear build, the first stage of this is a rigorous assessment of the reactor design by uk regulators, known as generic design assessment (gda). from april 2013 to december 2017, the uk abwr was assessed under gda by the office for nuclear regulation (onr), environment agency (ea) and natural resources wales (nrw). generic design assessment was successfully completed by hitachi-ge on its original schedule, with the issue of a design acceptance confirmation (dac) from onr, and a statement of design acceptability (soda) from ea and nrw on 14th december 2017. this website was developed to support public engagement during the gda process. through this site, hitachi-ge published its regulatory submissions, as well as lay summaries of the reactor design. these summaries – as well as the final regulatory submissions of the gda process – remain available. a key aspect of gda is a comment process, enabling members of the public, organisations and institutions to make comments or ask questions about the technology and abwrs are now in operation and an additional three are under construction in japan. the main components of the abwr that contibute to its enhanced safety are:- the reactor pressure vessel and nuclear reactor internals are contained within a reinforced concrete containment vessel. the reactor internal pumps which supply coolant water to the reactor core are directly mounted to the bottom of the reactor pressure vessel to eliminate the risks of a pipe break. fine motion control rod drives are applied to enhance the reliability and operability of the plant abwr engineering is performed with the advanced plant integrated cae system. this system covers the entire lifetime of the plant from the beginning to the end. during construction, we developed novel construction methods as a pioneer of large-scale module construction using very heavy lifts. our motto is "execute as planned". worker safety, high quality products and on-schedule performance can be realized by performing each step of the construction work as pre-planned. the abwr design incorporates "enhanced safety" features but in addition to these inherent safety features it adopts further enhanced safety measures to counteract any unexpected external hazards. for plants located along sea shores, main buildings are sufficiently elevated to withstand large-scale tsunamis. the backup building equipped with redundant emergency support facilities is located at an even higher elevation. in addition, watertight walls and doors are installed in major buildings. a filtered vent is installed as a measure to further reduce the risks of public exposure to radiation. the "backup building" provides accident management facilities. fuel and water tanks installed in the basement provide sufficient supplies for management of severe accidents. the first floor of the back-up building is equipped with: an air-cooled diesel generator a pump truck an alternate reactor cooling system vehicle dc batteries an alternate accident management control room and an emergency control office in addition, fire engines, and power supply vehicles for use in events of emergency are located in a vehicle station. the characteristics of safety-enhanced abwr are: the inherent safety features of bwr and abwr further enhancements based on fukushima lessons learned and severe accident management measures with the
